HiveGate™ provides the missing link between the hive entrance and the winter cluster by positioning the hive entrance inside the hive, under the cluster, where the colony can actively control what comes in and goes out. Betterbee is excited to carry this new product for US beekeepers and perform our own tests this coming summer.

By creating a hive entrance immediately underneath the main cluster, HiveGate allows the colony to control entry more effectively and safeguards your bees from wasps, yellowjackets, robbing bees, the Asian hornet (Vespa velutina), wax moths and other pests and predators.

How does it work? The HiveGate is essentially a plastic tube that lays on the bottom board of a Langstroth hive. The beekeeper closes off the rest of the hive's entrance so that bees use the tube as the entrance. The bees walk through the tube and enter the bee cluster near the center of the hive. A few methods are available to close off the entrance. One is to use an adapter plate (not included) that closes the rest of the entrance and allows for one or two HiveGates to be used. A beekeeper may also fashion a wooden entrance reducer with a 2-7/8 x 3/8" opening for the HiveGate to pass through.

Most beekeepers will use one HiveGate per hive. Some larger hives may require two HiveGates side by side to allow more bee traffic.

The HiveGate™ system is brought to us by Bee-IQ Solutions in New Zealand.
